After his birth in Bethlehem and the episode in the temple at age 12, the Bible is practically silent about Christ's growing years in Nazareth. This silence has always sparked curiosity. In the first centuries of Christianity, texts began to circulate that attempted to fill this void. Among them are writings such as the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, the Protoevangelium of James, and the Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew. These books are known as apocrypha: ancient texts that were not recognized by the church as part of Scripture. In them we find curious and often strange stories about the boy Jesus. Some accounts describe impressive miracles even in his childhood, such as clay birds that come to life, children who are cursed and then restored, statues that fall before the boy, and even animals that bow down before him during the journey to Egypt. But why do these texts exist? And why didn't the church recognize them as Scripture? In this video we explore the historical context of these writings, the type of theology that appears in them, and the reasons why the early church discerned that they did not carry the same authority as the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
