What's with the New York subway map?

Have you ever taken a good look at the New York subway map? There's more to it than just the dots and lines of the subway. Have you ever noticed all the extra information on there in addition to the subway information? If you list out all the extra non-subway information on this map, it's quite extensive. This map contains extra things like ferry routes; commuter rail routes of the Metro-North Railroad, the Long Island Rail Road, NJ Transit, PATH, and Amtrak; the JFK AirTrain; buses from LaGuardia and JFK Airports; landmarks; neighborhoods; and notable streets, roads, bridges, and tunnels. There's a lot to take in here.
