HUGH STRANGE : vital curiosity, in conversation with Marko Milovanovic

HUGH STRANGE is a London-based architect whose work is defined by precision, restraint and close attention to site and material. Hugh Strange Architects pursue an architecture of repair, responding to existing conditions with constructional clarity, circular thinking and care. The studio is intentionally small and hands-on, working closely with clients, builders and engineers from first sketch to completion. Significant works include Strange House in London (2010), the Drawing Matter Archive at Shatwell Farm (2014), and the Farmworker’s House in Cornwall (2024), shortlisted for House of the Year. Hastings House in East Sussex, a multi-level timber extension that re-stitches a steep garden, was shortlisted for the 2025 RIBA Stirling Prize. Across projects, the practice privileges low-carbon timber, legible structure and a sensitivity to cultural and historic context. Alongside practice, Strange teaches, lectures and writes. In 2024 he completed a PhD at AHO, The Oslo School of Architecture and Design, titled Architecture at the Building Site. FREE SCHOOL OF is a reflective, free-source educational platform celebrating conversation over any other form of knowledge. With the aim to challenge dogmas and explore contradictions, FSO is inconclusive and uncertain. At the heart of this school lies the curiosity about creative processes, boundaries between creative disciplines, and how established hierarchies between emerging and established voices can transform into platforms for learning.
