Prevention saves lives! Two weeks after the devastating earthquake of June 24, the Venezuelan scientific community shed light on the geological behavior and hydrological risks facing the central region. Geologist Feliciano De Santis explained that the collapse of more than 180 buildings and the high number of victims were due to a temporary coupling of the twin earthquakes (magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5), which generated impedance phenomena in areas with thick soil and soil degradation due to liquefaction. After the first 1,000 aftershocks were recorded, the expert anticipated that, based on historical statistics, between 3,000 and 3,400 secondary tremors could occur in the coming months. However, De Santis called for calm, clarifying that these aftershocks will gradually decrease in magnitude and frequency, emphasizing that the probability of a major earthquake is extremely low and that structures that withstood the main event are not at risk from attenuated aftershocks of magnitude 5. The scientist warned that the country has accumulated structural vulnerability over 50 years by losing its seismic awareness since the 1967 earthquake, forgetting that the northern region is located right on the boundary of the Caribbean and South American plates. Furthermore, in response to the Inameh alert regarding the passage of consecutive tropical waves through December, hydraulic and fluvial engineer Pedro De Santis reported the start of thorough inspections in the basins that descend from the Ávila mountain range toward the Caribbean Sea. The specialist, who assessed the iconic San Julián ravine on-site, confirmed that the transverse dikes and retention dams built after the 1999 Vargas mudslide are in perfect working order. De Santis emphasized that due to the extreme slopes of the coastal geography—which drops from 2,300 meters to sea level in stretches of just 7 kilometers—the immediate removal and cleaning of sediment from the riverbeds was ordered to mitigate vulnerability to torrential rains and prevent a mudslide. Although the Caribbean island chain usually diverts these weather systems northward, engineers warn of the possibility that a storm could enter through the gap between Margarita Island and the Lesser Antilles, threatening the stability of a region that officially has more than 3,600 dead, 16,000 injured, and 17,000 displaced.
