Gawthorpe Hall was constructed around 1600, in the Padiham area of Burnley, in the shadow of Pendle Hill. Built for Rev Lawrence Shuttleworth, the house was intended to demonstrate the wealth and status of the Shuttleworth family. The Hall remained in the family until 1970 when it was gifted to the National Trust Naturally, 4 Centuries on, there have been many ghost stories and folklore tales emanating from the walls of the Hall....including the Lady in Grey, the murdered servant girl, and the disembodied laughter of children. These and more have given the Hall the reputation of being Lancashire's Most Haunted building.
