Forgotten grandfathers -- Maori men of WW1 | Puawai Cairns | TEDxTauranga
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Forgotten grandfathers: Newly discovered stories from the Maori men of World War I. I was so moved by this talk of the Maori Contingent and their extraordinary contribution that Maori made to WWI and a British empire. Through Puawai, connections and stories of long lost uncles, grandfathers and brothers were told. Pauwai brought the touching story of her journey as Curator for the Gallipoli installation at Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington, New Zealand. Information on the soldiers of the Maori Contingent that served in WWI was scarce, so little was known of them that Puawai reached out using social media to research their motivations and stories. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
