Maarten Paes - "Het Indonesische volkslied kende ik al na een week."

In de tweede aflevering ligt de focus op Indonesië. Vorig jaar maakte Maarten zijn debuut voor het nationaal elftal van Indonesië, dat zich dit voorjaar probeert te kwalificeren voor het WK 2026 in de Verenigde Staten. Spannende tijden dus voor de Nijmeegse doelverdediger! Dat hij deel mag uitmaken van het Indonesisch elftal, heeft Maarten te danken aan zijn Indische oma. “Met oma had ik een speciale band. Als jongen bezocht ik haar elke dinsdag en donderdag. Ze gaf me bijles geschiedenis en kookte Indisch voor me. En ze vertelde vaak over haar jeugd in Nederlands-Indië.” De stap naar het Indonesisch elftal voelde meteen goed. “Indonesië is een fantastisch land, de fans zijn geweldig. 300 miljoen inwoners die allemaal voetbalgek zijn. Hun enthousiasme is behoorlijk extreem.” Spelen voor Indonesië is altijd een spektakel. Vooral thuis in Jakarta. “Een heksenketel is het. Dan sta je daar, met 80.000 fans om je heen. Het Indonesisch volkslied kende ik al na een week. Steeds als ik het zing denk ik aan mijn oma. Dat geeft me zoveel kracht voor de wedstrijd.” Maarten denkt hij met Indonesië veel kans maakt om het WK te halen. “Zeker met het team dat er nu staat. Ik voel dat we steeds sterker worden. Straks in 2026 Indonesië tegen Nederland in Dallas? Dat zou helemaal geweldig zijn. In this episode, the focus is on Indonesia. Last year, Maarten made his debut for the Indonesian national team, which is trying to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the US. Exciting times for the Nijmegen goalkeeper! Maarten owes his spot in the Indonesian team to his Indonesian grandmother. “I had a special bond with my grandma. As a kid, I’d visit her every Tuesday and Thursday. She would give me history lessons and cook Indonesian food for me. And she often shared stories about her childhood in the Dutch East Indies.” The move to the Indonesian team just felt right. “Indonesia is an amazing country, and the fans are fantastic. Imagine 300 million people all mad about football—their enthusiasm is off the charts.” Playing for Indonesia is always a spectacle, especially at home in Jakarta. “The atmosphere is electric—you’re there with 80,000 fans around you. I learnt the Indonesian national anthem in just a week. Every time I sing it, I think of my grandma, and that gives me loads of strength for the match.” Maarten believes Indonesia has a great shot at making the World Cup. “Especially with the current team. I feel like we’re only getting stronger. Imagine Indonesia facing the Netherlands in Dallas in 2026—that would be absolutely brilliant.
