He anchored live coverage of the big events - conventions, elections, inaugurations, etc. He also had 2 weekly prime time news shows on CBS (Eyewitness To History and the Twentieth Century). But Edwards was the anchor of the Evening News. It was only 15 minutes and not considered the "flagship" of CBS News at the time. Cronkite didn't anchor the Evening News until 1962. Behind Cronkite -- left to right Charles Collingwood, Eric Severeid, Douglas Edwards and Robert Trout. Years later in November 1963, all of them except Edwards would be involved in the first two hours of the Kennedy assassination news coverage.
