During a press conference to provide an update on national football issues, FESFUT President Yamil Bukele addressed the meeting held with the directors of the First Division teams, an encounter he described as positive and focused on the future of Salvadoran football. Bukele explained that the FESFUT Executive Committee approved maintaining the current format for the upcoming tournament, as time did not allow for significant modifications to the competition structure. He also noted that the start of the championship could not be delayed, since FIFA requires tournaments to conclude by the end of May, before the World Cup. However, he made it clear that there will be substantial changes starting with the next tournament, even to its name. “There will be changes for the next tournament. So much so that I won't call it Apertura or Clausura, because that's something we're going to discuss,” he stated. Regarding the new format, Bukele stated that the goal is to increase competitiveness from the very first matchday and give greater value to the regular season. “The format will be much more competitive. We are even considering rewarding the regular season with a championship, a trophy, and a cash prize,” he revealed. “The intention is that something can be won from the first match, not just a trophy, and that qualifying for the next phase has real value,” he added, while questioning why the excitement is currently concentrated solely in the final stages. “We have seen that many times the eighth-place team eliminates the first-place team, and the idea is that a better regular season is worthwhile in order to achieve a better ranking and a more secure position,” he pointed out. The FESFUT president also indicated that the new system could produce several champions in the same season. “This would result in a regular season champion, a cup champion, and then the national champion—that is, two or three tournaments in the same year,” he commented.
