Sie trugen ihn auf der Bahre bloß This song cycle is based on the 'mad songs' of the young noblewoman Ophelia in Shakespeare's Hamlet. Ophelia has been promised to Prince Hamlet to marry. After Hamlet 'pretends' to go insane, insults her honour, and (separately) kills her father, Ophelia goes insane. She wanders Elsinore singing nonsense songs, and eventually drowns. -- Note: There are some audio crackles - please disregard them!
