Generative AI has enabled new digital teaching and learning experiences in tutoring, content generation, assessments, data analysis, and more. In this talk, I will share various examples of what GenAI has made possible, and discuss the potential pitfalls and real-world challenges it poses, both technical and educational. I will discuss how AI is impacting nearly 5 million learners in Rajasthan State of India where it is used to score paper worksheets in government schools. I will introduce an educational A/B testing tool called ReSource that makes it easier for researchers to test and iteratively improve AI tutoring experiences and digital learning content. I will address key challenges that AI faces - hallucinations, issues with mathematics, missing context, value for newcomers versus experts, issues with image generators, and ethical concerns with data copyright. As we apply GenAI for education, finding the right balance between innovation and responsible implementation will guide us in the right direction. Bio: Nirmal Patel is an EdTech entrepreneur and researcher. He is the Chief Data Scientist at Playpower Labs, a leading edtech R&D lab, and CEO of EdOptimize, an upcoming edtech startup focused on using AI to improve educational outcomes. Nirmal's research is centered around using educational data mining, learning engineering, and AI to create effective and engaging edtech products and experiences. He has published over 10 research papers on learning technologies at venues like ACM CHI, Journal of Educational Data Mining, and Journal of Computer Assisted Learning. His research has won awards at the Intelligent Tutoring Systems conference, IEEE, and ACM CHI. Nirmal's most notable innovation "Smart Paper" was recently recognized by UNESCO for its massive impact on 5 million students for assessment data digitization. Smart Paper is an AI vision tool to grade paper worksheets, currently used by the Rajasthan State Government in 65,000 public schools for assessment digitization.
