July 2023 Urbex Exploring in Rhodes/Greece Hotel Elafina When Fascist Italy liberated Rhodes from the Turks, the plan was implemented to develop the island into a tourist resort. One of the first buildings for this project were the two hotels Elafos and Elafina, which at that time was called in Italian "l Albergo del Cervo" (The Hotel of the Deer) and named after the emblem of Rhodes, the deer and the hind. Originally it was used to accommodate Italian officers and only much later became a hotel for the public. The first part of the complex, Elafos, was built in 1929 and is located at an altitude of 780 meters on the mountain Profiti Ilias. The building consists of a framework of reinforced concrete and masonry, a roof of wooden beams and a roof covering of special corrugated iron. In 1930 opened a restaurant on the first floor, added a terrace a dance floor and a tennis court. In 2006, the smaller Hotel Elafos was lovingly restored and is now operating again as a hotel and cafe. Across the street there is another building with a restaurant. The second hotel, Elafina, is still dormant, partly used for storage and only sporadically restored.
