How did ancient humans stay clean without soap, shampoo, showers, plumbing, or washing machines? They were not clean by modern standards. Their bodies carried smoke, dirt, sweat, plant fragments, and parasites. But that does not mean they ignored hygiene. In this video, you’ll discover how ancient humans may have rinsed dirt from their bodies, groomed one another, removed lice and ticks, replaced dirty bedding, used smoke and ash to discourage insects, protected water sources, and organized camps to reduce waste and contamination. Archaeological evidence from Border Cave in South Africa shows grass bedding placed over layers of ash about 200,000 years ago. At Sibudu rock shelter, people used aromatic leaves with insect-repelling properties and later burned old bedding as part of site maintenance. The most important prehistoric hygiene tool may not have touched the body at all. It was control of the small environment around the body: fresh bedding, ash beneath it, fire nearby, waste farther away, protected water, and other people willing to groom and care for you.
