霧島神宮は、鹿児島県霧島市にある神社。 創建は、欽明天皇元年（540年）と伝わる数少ない「神宮号」を名乗る古社である。 創建当初は、霧島連山の高千穂峰と御鉢の間に建てられたが、度重なる霧島山の噴火により社殿の焼失と移転を繰り返してきた。 文明16年（1484年）、島津忠昌の命によって再興したのが、現在地の霧島神宮である。 その後も焼失を繰り返し、現社殿は正徳５年（1715年）、薩摩藩主島津吉貴が奉納したものである。 閑寂な杉木立に包まれた参道を抜けると、格調高い朱塗りの荘厳な社殿が現れる。 御神木の杉は樹齢約800年と推定され、南九州の杉の祖先ともいわれている。 社殿は、山の傾斜を利用して建てられ、本殿、幣殿、拝殿が国宝に指定されている。 霧島神宮は、高千穂峰が天孫降臨の伝承地とされる事から、主祭神に瓊瓊杵尊を祀るが、元々は高千穂峰そのものを信仰の対象とする山岳信仰から始まったと云わる。 明治の神仏分離令まで、修験僧による霧島六所権現信仰の中心的役割を果たしてきた。 神宮周辺には、自然豊かな景勝地が点在し、都市の喧騒から離れ神聖な空気を味わえる場所である。 国宝／式内社／鹿児島県霧島市 ____________________________________________________ Kirishima Jingu Shrine is located in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is said to have been founded in the 540 and is one of the few old shrines to call itself "Jingu". The shrine was originally built between Takachiho and Mihachi in the Kirishima mountain range, but has been repeatedly burned down and relocated due to the repeated eruptions of Mount Kirishima. In 1484, the shrine was rebuilt by order of Shimazu Tadamasa at its present location. It was repeatedly destroyed by fire, and the present shrine was dedicated by Shimazu Yoshitaka, feudal lord of Satsuma, in 1715. Passing through the approach to the shrine surrounded by a quiet grove of cedar trees, one comes to the majestic vermilion-lacquered shrine pavilion. The sacred cedar tree is estimated to be approximately 800 years old and is said to be the ancestor of cedar trees in southern Kyushu. The shrine pavilions were built on the slope of the mountain, and the main hall, the offering hall, and the worship hall are designated as national treasures. The Kirishima Jingu Shrine enshrines Ninigi no Mikoto as its main deity, since Takachiho Peak is believed to be the place where God descended from the heavens. but it is said that it originally began with mountain worship, with Takachihomine itself as the object of worship. Until the separation of Shintoism and Buddhism in the Meiji era, the shrine played a central role in the belief in Kirishima Rokusho Gongen by Shugen monks.
