On March 12, 2026, a nationwide warning day took place in several German states. In North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria, this nationwide warning day has been standard practice for several years. Since 2025, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse have also conducted a nationwide warning day on the second Thursday in March. During this event, all warning systems are tested for functionality, including stationary and mobile sirens, warning apps, the Cell Broadcast system introduced in Germany in 2022, digital display boards, and much more. This video, recorded in Bad Godesberg, documents the test alarm in the former capital city of Bonn. Bonn once had 118 sirens (type: E57) operated by the federal government. After the end of the Cold War, the city of Bonn took over only 33 of these sirens. The rest were dismantled. In 2013, the modernization of the city's siren network began, carried out by the company Hörmann. Since the completion of this project, near-complete sound coverage of the (populated) city area is ensured by 56 high-performance electronic sirens (type: ECN-1200-/2400-D). The new sirens are battery-backed and therefore function even during power outages. Furthermore, their status can be continuously monitored by the control center. This allows for the early detection of any malfunctions. The Godesburg castle is located in the immediate vicinity of the recording site. An E57 siren is mounted on one of its towers – definitely one of the most beautiful and unusual siren locations in the region! Until the Bonn siren network was converted to electronic sirens, this system was even in regular operation. Unfortunately, it is now deactivated. However, there are several videos on other YouTube channels that show this siren in action.
