Pastor Nathan begins by reminding us that true wisdom starts with the fear of the Lord. God is the source of what is good, right, and true. The world often wants the goodness of God’s kingdom, such as justice, peace, love, and fairness, but without submitting to the King. True wisdom comes when we submit to God and allow Him to teach us. Looking at Proverbs 2, Pastor Nathan shows that a wise person is a teachable person. If we are not teachable, we will lack wisdom, and our choices over time will reflect it. Teachability involves several key things. 1. Teachability is a constant desire to learn about life. Proverbs says to tune our ears to wisdom and concentrate on understanding. Like a guitar that constantly needs tuning, we also need regular checking and realignment. We need to keep tuning in to God, His Word, and sound biblical teaching. When we stop learning, we can drift into bad habits, complacency, ignorance, or even deception. 2. Teachability is humble enough to ask others. Proverbs tells us to cry out for insight and ask for understanding. Asking questions is not weakness. It is humility. A teachable person is willing to admit, “I do not understand,” or “I may not know what to do.” Pride keeps us from asking, learning, and receiving correction. Humility opens the door to wisdom. 3. Teachability is honesty. Pastor Nathan highlights Proverbs 2:7, which says that God grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. Teachability requires honesty with God, with ourselves, and often with trusted people around us. This includes honesty about our sin, attitudes, shortcomings, weaknesses, blind spots, family patterns, cultural formation, and the ways we may lack the fruit of the Spirit. Being honest is not about condemnation. It is part of the pathway to freedom. Jesus said the truth will set us free. When we allow God to speak truthfully to us about us, we begin to grow in wisdom and maturity. 4. Teachability values wisdom like treasure. Proverbs says to search for wisdom like silver and seek it like hidden treasure. Pastor Nathan challenges us to consider what our hearts truly value. If we can get excited about money, success, or possessions, how much more should we treasure learning the ways of Jesus and being formed in godly character? 5. Teachability is rewarding. Wisdom enters the heart, brings joy, helps us find the right way to go, and protects us from poor choices. Wisdom does not only fill our minds with information. It forms us into people of godly character. True teachability leads to visible change that others can experience in us. Pastor Nathan closes by asking a simple but challenging question: Are you teachable? A teachable person keeps learning, keeps listening, keeps asking, keeps growing, and keeps submitting to God. We do not do this in our own strength. We need the grace of God, the help of the Holy Spirit, and the humility to say yes to Him.
