The 100K building isn't at all what people think it is. And what happens there is... wrong. The people that arrive for testing aren't the regular employees from Station 9. They're either a portion of the new hires that the rest of town doesn't know about, or people that have so-called retired or transferred out of town. But of course, they're brought to 100K. Tell me about the building. It's more than just a building. It's sort of like an elevator that goes deep underground, but the deeper you go, the closer your mental alignment becomes with the Mur. The Tunnel, as we call it, is a controlled exposure corridor that tests the Consciousness Depth Index, or CDI. And what is the Mur? It's short for Murmur. It's what The Authority are trying to understand. It's what they found. It's both a physical entity and consciousness itself, transmitting directly into people's thoughts. But I don't know what it transmits, or communicates. It doesn't speak to you? I don't remember. Every time I have to go down The Tunnel my memories are scrubbed and I end up back in my office above ground. But aren't you the building manager? Oh, there are people much more powerful than me. I just keep the gears turning and have the privilege of going home without a full memory wipe. Right. What about the subject's memories? Every day their memories are extracted and taken as data states to a holding facility that people call The Cube. The subjects are then wiped clean. Well... their memories are, anyway. What's left of them, I can't really say. What happens to the memories after that? I have no idea. I don't even know what they contain. I assume they're studied, but for what purpose I don't know. Can you speak more on the CDI? Sure. The CDI is a testing and measurement system of mental alignment with the entity. The further down you go, the closer you get. At 25,000 Mneme units you'll experience mild cognitive bleed. Station 9 never experiences above 50K—hallucinations, visions, memory instability, stuff like that. But it's logarithmic. In The Tunnel, our end goal is to reach what's called Compatibility. 100,000 Mnemes. Past identity cross-contamination and into full contact saturation with the Mur. And what happens when people go that far? Well, no one has ever made it to 100K Mnemes before. But as subjects approach it, the results are... disturbingly catastrophic. I see.
