Mangala Devi Kannagi Temple History in Tamil - மங்கலதேவி கண்ணகி கோவில் வரலாறு The Mangala Devi Kannagi Temple is a 1,000 to 2,000-year-old historic site located in tamilnadu, theni district border and the Periyar Tiger Reserve in Idukki, Kerala border dedicated to Kannagi, the heroine of the Tamil epic Cilappatikaram. Built by Chera King Cheran Senguttuvan in the 2nd Century CE at Vannathiparai, it honors Kannagi as a goddess of justice after she burned Madurai following her husband’s unjust execution. Following the destruction of Madurai, Kannagi is said to have ascended to the hills (now part of the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border) and remained there for 14 days before ascending to heaven with her husband, Kovalan. Cheran Senguttuvan established the temple, known as "Kannagi Kottam," to deify her. The temple features ancient Pandyan architecture, characterized by large granite blocks, and lies at an altitude of 1,337 meters. The temple is currently in a dilapidated state and is often disputed between Kerala and Tamil Nadu governments, with limited access granted only on Chitra Pournima day. It is known as the "Mangala Devi Kannagi Temple" and is deeply significant as a symbol of female empowerment. The temple serves as a testament to the cultural integration between the ancient Chera and Pandya regions.
