Total lockdown in Tenerife: Navigation ban and isolation for a WHO expert The Spanish government has decreed the complete isolation of the MV Hondius cruise ship in Tenerife, prohibiting navigation within one nautical mile of the vessel to guarantee an impenetrable sanitary cordon. During the evacuation operation, which will be carried out by boats and escorted buses to the airport, a key exception has been confirmed: the WHO Africa epidemiologist will not be repatriated with the rest of the international staff. Considered a direct contact of those infected with hantavirus, the expert will disembark along with the 14 Spanish passengers to be transferred under strict security measures to a high-level isolation unit in Madrid. The Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, has insisted that there is no risk to the civilian population, as the evacuation route in the port of Granadilla will be completely cordoned off and under police surveillance.
