РЕЗЬБОРЕЗКА МЕЧТЫ! Шикарное упражнение для токарей!

I made a DIE HOLDER for cutting threads, combining turning, milling and welding. The process involved solving many problems, experimental approaches and introducing my own improvement - a bayonet mount, which makes the design convenient and practical. It was another day in my workshop, full of difficulties, unexpected solutions and small discoveries. This time I decided to make a die holder - a useful device that can greatly facilitate cutting threads. A lathe has two main ways of cutting threads: the first, the main one, is with a cutter. Here you can create a thread of any diameter and pitch, but on amateur machines this process becomes a real challenge due to the need to constantly change gears. I have a whole box of them and a table, but, frankly speaking, fiddling with this every time is quite tedious. Therefore, the second method, using a die, seems much more attractive. However, holding the die manually is inconvenient: it starts to "write out eights", and the result is far from ideal. I studied various die holder designs presented on the Internet and developed my own version - simple, aesthetic and accessible for a novice turner to make. First of all, I prepared the base - a Morse cone. I found a fresh, clearly never used cone, which was ideal for my project. Although high accuracy is not required here, I strive for maximum accuracy, because I know that the result will still be far from ideal. To process the workpiece, I had to remove the chuck and install it directly into the spindle. I hoped that the friction force would be enough to hold everything. The work went on as usual, but soon I encountered an unexpected problem: I could not remove the cone back. I heard that this happens, but I never thought that I would encounter it myself. I had to urgently make a technological hole - it turned out, to put it mildly, not ideal, but it worked. Next I started welding. Both parts were held together only by friction until I pressed them in a vice. I wrapped the cone in foil for protection, and lo and behold, the runout decreased after welding! Looks like luck was on my side today. As I continued working, I remembered how much I hate cutting threads with a cutter. The minimum speed on my machine is too high, everything happens too quickly, and as I expected, the cutters started breaking one by one. Realizing my mistake, I sharpened the damaged cutter with a tool rest I made a couple of years ago. The result was so-so, but it was good enough for the task. The threads were not perfectly smooth, but the nut screwed on tightly and without effort. Then I moved on to boring - this was a case where I clearly lacked the rigidity of the machine and the right tool. I had to admit: I was not able to achieve a perfectly smooth surface yet. The final stage was milling and grinding. It was especially interesting to work with the dividing head. Some of the parts were fastened with screws with a strength index of 12.9 - they had to be cut exactly by 4 mm. The easiest way was to use a metal plate. Everything turned out perfectly: the screw legs were slightly recessed, the irregularities inside did not require additional processing. With each stage, I encountered minor difficulties. For example, I discovered that the coolant was actively evaporating, and its vapors began to irritate my throat. I had to work in a respirator. Or here's another thing: for the first time, I added my know-how to the die holder - a bayonet mount. It eliminated the need to use a clamping screw and a key, which, in my opinion, makes the design more convenient. In the end, the die holder was ready, and I tested it. Not everything went smoothly: the machine was heavy, the tailstock was creeping, the thread was far from ideal. But I realized that with manual rotation of the chuck with a key, the result would be much better. Despite all the mistakes, I do not lose optimism. This was another step in my development as a master, and, as always, I am waiting for your advice and opinions. I will be glad for any support, because your feedback helps me move forward. Thank you for watching, supporting and helping me become better!
