The first MAZ "saddle truck" was the relatively little-known MAZ-205A: a tractor on the short-wheelbase chassis of the MAZ-205 dump truck. Prototypes of these vehicles appeared as early as 1949. It was designed to tow the MAZ-5201 flatbed semitrailer with a 12-ton load capacity. Its powertrain was the same as that of the dump truck (a two-stroke, 4-cylinder YaAZ-204A diesel engine producing 110 horsepower with a 5-speed gearbox), so the road train's performance at full load was quite mediocre, and its average speed rarely exceeded 35 km/h.
