UN backed forces hold back attack on Tripoli

(13 Jun 2019) Armed confrontations resumed in Libya between the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) and General Khalifa Hifter's Libyan National Army (LNA) in the southern neighbourhoods of the country's capital on Thursday. The heaviest clashes were seen in the airport road and the Swani areas south of Tripoli, but loud explosions can also be heard in other parts of the capital. Bashier Abdul-Latif, a commander for one of the UN-backed forces, said they have destroyed a tank from the LNA side. GNA forces were seen loading up their ammunition and advancing towards the LNA forces in Tripoli. Forces led by Khalifa Hifter have been trying to gain control in Tripoli but faced resistance from UN-backed forces since April. Hifter's offensive in the country's capital left at least 650 dead and displaced hundreds and thousands of people, according to the United Nations.
