Six of the wealthiest countries in the Middle East are collaborating to build a railway line spanning over 2,000 kilometers. This project aims to enhance regional connectivity, despite the enormous challenges it faces, from traversing sandy deserts to tunneling through rugged mountains, which entails significant costs. This project represents an unprecedented step towards unifying the Gulf region, reshaping the transportation sector, reducing carbon emissions, and opening new horizons for economic development. With a total cost of $100 billion, the project is being built in the heart of the desert, making it a unique engineering feat. The idea for this project began in February 1981 when the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman met in Riyadh to establish the Gulf Cooperation Council. Despite the vast oil and gas reserves of the GCC countries, the global economic recession of 2008-2009 led to a decline in oil prices, negatively impacting their economies and highlighting the need to diversify income sources and reduce dependence on oil. The railway project emerged as part of a comprehensive vision to achieve this goal, aiming to connect the countries' ports with manufacturing centers and enhance connectivity between urban areas and ports. In 2009, the project was launched with member states agreeing to finance it, with estimated costs ranging from $100 billion to $250 billion. Among the most expensive components of the project are initiatives like the Saudi Metro and the UAE's Etihad Rail, valued at $11 billion and spanning 1,200 kilometers. This project represents the UAE's first national railway network, with the first phase completed in 2016, connecting industrial areas and ports to boost freight traffic. The region's topography presents significant challenges; in addition to vast deserts, there are rugged mountain ranges in the north of the UAE and Oman. These challenges extend beyond simply building railway networks in environments like the Rocky Mountains in the United States. High temperatures and shifting sands also hinder construction. To overcome these obstacles, the UAE has drawn on the expertise of other countries, such as China, Saudi Arabia, and Mauritania, which have developed innovative technologies for navigating desert environments. The locomotives are designed to withstand harsh conditions and are equipped with a sand filtration system and a special plow for easy navigation across shifting terrain. In the first phase, advanced infrastructure was constructed, including bridges, tunnels, and factories producing concrete sleepers using local materials, enabling trains to travel at speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour. The first phase of the project focuses on transporting granular sulfur extracted from Abu Dhabi's oil fields to the port of Ruwais, reducing carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to truck transport. This transportation method has become a key factor in solidifying the UAE's position as the world's largest exporter of sulfur. The second phase began in 2020, adding 605 kilometers to the network and connecting the Saudi border with the UAE's east coast. Design and construction contracts were signed with international companies to ensure the completion of this vital section, which will enable the transport of more than 50 million tons of goods annually. Despite political and economic challenges, such as Qatar's exclusion from the project and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the timeline, the project remains a pivotal element in the Gulf Cooperation Council's (GCC) strategy to enhance sustainability and diversify its economies. While the population still prefers cars, railways offer significant economic value and are part of a long-term vision for greater connectivity among the GCC countries. The project has spurred the emergence of a new industry in the region, creating jobs and developing training programs to qualify local talent in the railway sector. Over the past three decades, railway lines have become a natural extension of the tremendous economic growth experienced by the GCC countries. The project represents a bold step towards strengthening regional connectivity and building a sustainable and diversified economic future for the region.
