The Kozhi Nercha (poultry offering) at the Edappally St. George Forane Church in Kochi is a centuries-old tradition deeply intertwined with local legends and faith in St. George, whom devotees fondly call "Edappally Punyalan" (Saint of Edappally). The ritual, which takes place during the annual feast, is a unique, popular devotion where people offer chickens to the saint, often in thanksgiving for protection from dangers. Here is the history and significance behind this tradition: The History of Edappally St. George Church Ancient Origins: The church is believed to have been founded in 593 AD, making it one of the oldest churches in Kerala. It was originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary (Marth Mariam). Devotion to St. George: Over time, particularly as the church became known for miracles, it was rededicated to St. George, a 4th-century martyr and soldier. The Miraculous Well: The church courtyard features a, holy well, believed to have curative powers. Devotees believe that the water level in this well always remains 2 meters below ground, regardless of the season. The Legend Behind the Kozhi Nercha The Kozhi Nercha is not merely a custom but is rooted in specific beliefs: Protection from Snake Bites: In tropical Kerala, snake bites were a serious threat. St. George is traditionally depicted on horseback stabbing a serpent (a symbol of Satan) under his horse’s hooves. Consequently, people came to believe that praying to him at this church provides special protection from snake bites and other reptiles. Gratitude for Miracles: Devotees who believed their prayers—especially for health, protection, or fertility—were answered would offer hens or chickens (Kozhi) to the church as a sign of thanksgiving. A "Deviating" Tradition: Historically, any large celebration required the approval of the local Elangalloor Swaroopam Namboothiri king. Legend suggests that to get permission for the festivities, the church offered numerous sweets to the king, a tradition that evolved into the offering of chickens and other items by the community. How the Nercha is Conducted Offering Poultry: During the 9-day annual festival (April 23 to May 5), thousands of devotees from various religious backgrounds offer chickens and eggs. Auctioning: The offered hens are auctioned off on the church premises. Community Cooking: A distinct aspect of the Nercha is that many devotees cook the chicken in the immediate vicinity of the church and share it with others, symbolizing communal harmony and trust. Other Offerings: Apart from poultry, people offer gold or silver figurines of snakes and human body parts to the saint to seek healing.
