Oda Nobunaga's sisters, Oichi and Oinu, renowned as the most beautiful women of the Sengoku period, were manipulated as pawns in their brother's political marriages amidst the power struggles of the turbulent times, and both met tragic ends following the Honnoji Incident of 1582. First, Oinu's fate was harsh. After losing her first husband, Saji Nobukata, lord of Ono Castle, in battle against the Ikkō-ikki rebels, she was ordered by Nobunaga to remarry Hosokawa Nobuyoshi, a member of the old noble family of the Muromachi Shogunate. However, Nobuyoshi was given no real power, and Oinu lived each day in a sense of stagnation and helplessness. Then the Honnoji Incident occurred, and her brother, Nobunaga, the absolute ruler, was killed. Perhaps due to the despair of losing her greatest protector and the mental exhaustion, Oinu fell ill and quietly passed away on September 4th of the same year, just about three months after her brother's death. Her sons (including Saji Kazunari) were also treated poorly by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and faded from the forefront of history. Meanwhile, Oichi had a tragic past, having lost her first husband, Asai Nagamasa, in battle against her brother, Nobunaga. After Nobunaga committed suicide in the Honnoji Incident, she remarried Shibata Katsuie, the chief retainer of the Oda family, and entered Kitano-sho Castle in Echizen. However, Katsuie clashed fiercely with Hashiba (Toyotomi) Hideyoshi over control of the Oda family. When Katsuie was defeated at the Battle of Shizugatake in 1583, Kitano-sho Castle was heavily besieged by Hideyoshi's large army. While Oichi had survived the fall of Odani Castle with her daughters, this time was different. Refusing to accept the humiliation of surrendering to Hideyoshi's army, she decided to choose death as a proud princess of the Oda family. Lady Oichi managed to get only her three daughters (Chacha, Hatsu, and Go) to safety outside the castle, while she herself took her own life in the keep with Katsuie. She is said to have been 37 years old. Thus, both beautiful sisters met a cruel end. However, the "Asai Three Sisters," whom Lady Oichi risked her life to help escape, were later given generous protection by Hideyoshi. The eldest daughter, Chacha, became Yodo-dono, wielding power within the Toyotomi family, and the youngest daughter, Go, became the principal wife of the Tokugawa shogunate, laying the foundation for the prosperity of the Edo shogunate. The tears and pride shed by the Oda sisters transcended their deaths and were certainly passed on to a new era of peace, from the Toyotomi to the Tokugawa...
