The History of Doctor Who Viewing Figures: The Sylvester McCoy Years (1987-1989)
The History of Doctor Who Viewing Figures: The Sylvester McCoy Years (1987-1989) Sylvester McCoy became the seventh actor to take on the role of the Doctor. Having made his name as a stuntman in the Ken Campbell Roadshow & a children's entertainer in programmes such as Eureka & Vision On, McCoy seemed to some, a somewhat odd choice to take the TARDIS keys. With precious little time to get to grips with the character before the cameras started rolling, Sylvester leapt in head first, battling an old enemy in the evil Rani, and delivering a first season that some see as too lighthearted and campy, but is a lot of fun to watch back! For his second & third season, a darker Doctor begins to emerge. A man with a lot more mystique, not afraid to showcase his power, his intelligence, and the lengths he is willing to go to, to achieve his own ends, or complete his grand master plans. There's so much to love about the McCoy Years, the renewed sense of fun, and fresh new adventures and monsters to keep audiences entertained. Many stories from these three years, are often cited as some of the best Who serials ever! Including Remembrance of the Daleks, the Curse of Fenric & Survival. But how did the ratings hold up? Would a fresh streak of creative imagination and ambition help the viewing figures shoot back up to higher marks? Or would the downward trend from the Trial season continue to reach even lower depths...? And as the 80s drew to a close, did Doctor Who have enough success left to survive into the 1990s? Join me, as we delve into the Sylvester McCoy Years, and find out!
