Nickelodeon ABANDONED This Studio… But The Slime Survived
There is a time capsule buried in California that is scheduled to open on April 30, 2042. It was sealed inside Nickelodeon Studios Florida in 1992, a working television production facility that produced over 2,000 episodes in a single decade. The studio closed in 2005. The capsule is no longer where it was buried. Nickelodeon Studios Florida was the first and only working television production facility ever built directly inside a major theme park. From 1990 to 2005, it produced Double Dare, Legends of the Hidden Temple, All That, and dozens of other shows that defined a generation—all filmed live in front of studio audiences pulled directly from Universal Studios Florida guests. At its peak, the facility employed 400 people and generated an estimated $110 million annually for the state of Florida. The fatal flaw was written in from the beginning: while the studio was built for live-action production, Nickelodeon's future was in animation. By the mid-1990s, the network's highest-rated shows (Rugrats, Doug, Ren and Stimpy) were all animated and produced entirely in California. The Florida facility became orphaned by its own parent company's success. After 1997, when Nickelodeon opened its primary production hub in Los Angeles, the Florida studio entered a slow decline. Productions relocated. Soundstages went dark. In 2001, layoffs began. The final show taped on August 17, 2004. The facility officially closed April 30, 2005—exactly 13 years after the time capsule was buried at the same location. The murals and original branding remained visible inside Building 17 for years after closure, preserved by neglect. The slime geyser was removed within weeks. The orange exterior was repainted. Within months, the building that had been impossible to miss looked like it had never been anything at all. The time capsule was dug up in August 2006 and moved to the Nickelodeon Suites Resort, then relocated again in 2016 to Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, California, where it remains sealed and buried for another 18 years. The studio is forgotten. The capsule cannot be.
