His breakthrough track, "Flowers," recorded with Theo Parrish, became a late summer anthem in 2012, its sticky Rhodes and simple vocal refrains soundtracking countless humid afternoons. Ashong tends to weave his voice around his accompanying instrumentation. On a track like "Special," which appeared on his self-titled second EP, he modulates his sparse lines so they glide among the song's plaintive guitars. His recorded music owes a debt to artists like Roy Ayers, but Ashong also has a foot in the club: his frequent DJs sets in London and beyond have helped him connect with an audience more attuned to beats than baritone.
