The beloved Kiha 85 series, a beloved limited express train connecting Nagoya and Takayama, came to an end after 34 years on the 9th. On the 9th, many train fans gathered at JR Takayama Station in Gifu Prefecture with cameras in hand! Witness the final run of the diesel-powered Kiha 85 series. The Kiha 85 series debuted as a limited express train on the Takayama Line in February 1989. The Hida Limited Express, affectionately known for many years as the "Wide View," marked the end of its life as a Kiha 85 series. This was the first limited express train developed by JR Central after the privatization of the former Japanese National Railways (JNR). It also served as the Nanki Limited Express, connecting Nagoya and Kii-Katsuura in Wakayama Prefecture. However, with the introduction of the new hybrid train, the HC85 series, regular service will cease at the end of June. On the 9th, JR Central Tours will hold a final run event, running non-stop between Takayama Station and Nagoya Station. The special train departed Takayama Station at 2:00 p.m. Meanwhile, we visited a train enthusiast living in Seki City, Gifu Prefecture. We visited Toshiaki Goto (49), a truck driver who has been a fan for 45 years. Goto owns a "tetsuincho" (railway stamp book), rather than a goshuincho (temple stamp book), which is proof that he has traveled all over the country on local trains. He says he has special feelings about the last run of the Kiha 85 series. (Goto Toshiaki) "I think I took this photo around my first year of high school. The Kiha 85 series was the train that made the biggest impression on me when I first encountered it in junior high school. The engine sound was completely different from other trains. The acceleration was so intense I thought it was a sports car." Goto's love for trains led him to personally organize a group trip on the Kiha 85 series through a travel agency three years ago. Approximately 80 train enthusiasts attended. And now, he's come up with another plan for this trip... (Goto Toshiaki) "I wanted to bring together not only our friends, but also the local community to witness it all." He headed to the railroad line near Nagamori Station in Gifu City. Many of his friends had gathered, carrying handmade flags and banners. (Visitor) "I feel sad. This is a train I've been taking pictures of since I was a child." "I've been riding it with my child in my arms since he was born." (Goto Toshiaki) "I feel a little sad. I don't know what to say right before it arrives." A little after 4 PM... the Kiha 85 series arrived. Goto also called out, "Thank you!" And then, the last Kiha 85 series train sped past. (Goto Toshiaki) "I'm really happy that everyone thought so much of me. All I want to say is...thank you for your hard work." At Nagoya Station, the final stop, a throng of train fans greeted the train. 34 years and five months after its debut, the beloved Kiha 85 series has completed its final mission.
