Cleveland's 'Lions of Lakeside' Mike White and George Forbes repair their friendship after 3 decades

Few political rivalries in Cleveland's history burned as brightly — or as bitterly — as the one between Mike White and George Forbes. Once close allies, the two found themselves on opposite sides of a heated mayoral race in 1989, turning friends into foes. Now, after decades of silence, the two have reconciled. "We were ride-or-die before there was ride-or-die," White recalled. The campaign quickly turned personal and ugly, with each side hurling accusations. Retired 3News senior political correspondent Tom Beres covered the race from from beginning to end, and still describes it as one of the nastiest in the city's history. "It got nasty, it got ugly," Beres said. "They hung a lot of laundry on the line. Very personal, and very unpleasant." White ultimately won the election and served three terms as mayor, but the damage to his friendship with Forbes seemed permanent. The two did not speak for more than three decades. That changed last year when they ran into each other at a building dedication for a mutual friend.
