Found in Columbia by orchid collector William Arnold. The first plants were sold through Sander's firm (English orchid firm Sander's Ltd.). The plants were purchased by Baron von Schröder (J. H. W. von Schröder), one of the largest orchid collectors of the 19th century. The plant was originally described in 1887 by Heinrich Reichenbach as a form of Cattleya trianaei. The form was named in honor of Baroness Schröder - Cattleya trianaei f. schroederae. The dark-flowered form Cattleya trianaei f. schroederiana was named in honor of Baroness Schröder. However, Sander was convinced that the new cattleya was an independent species, since it differed well from Cattleya trianaei in its aroma and some features of the flower structure. Subsequently, Cattleya schroederae came to be considered an independent species.
