Slunj is most famous for its historic district called Rastoke - a traditional village of water mills located on a meeting point of Korana and Slunjčica rivers among a fairy tale landscape of small waterfalls, cascades, streams and ponds. In this video we will, however, take a walk through the other part of this small town and end it by the fortress called Old Town Slunj (Stari grad Slunj) which overlooks the river. It is located very close to the famous Plitvice Lakes National Park (Plitvička jezera). The town of Slunj was as a military outpost during the Ottoman wars as this part of Croatia served as a Military Frontier (Vojna Krajina) of the Habsburg Monarchy. Even today this region is called Kordun which derives from a French term for Military Frontier: Cordon Militaire. It is narrowest part of Croatia which connects lower northern regions and mountains which spread towards the Adriatic sea.
