Post-war Literature / Rubble Literature - A Literary Period Explained Simply - Characteristics, History, Representatives, Literature. After the war ended, denazification began. Authors were accused, their works were banned, and some were no longer allowed to publish. Writers who had fled into exile returned, some remained in exile, and others committed suicide because they could not cope with the situation in Germany. The events were partly processed, but also repressed. There was a renewed focus on traditional and Christian values. In prose, short stories in particular were written, dealing with the events of the war. The most famous representative was Wolfgang Borchert. In poetry, writers abandoned traditional forms, working without rhyme, etc. In drama, mainly old, well-known plays were performed; in the East, plays by younger authors, such as Bertolt Brecht, were also staged. These dramas dealt, and continue to deal, openly with the war and the society that attempted to repress it. Well-known literary figures of this era include Bertolt Brecht, Arno Schmidt, Carl Zuckmayer, Wolfgang Borchert, and Johannes R. Becher.
