Data from the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) for the year 2017 indicates an estimated population of 20,636 inhabitants. Its territorial area is approximately 1,133 square kilometers, and it is 296 kilometers from the capital, Natal. Its predominant biome is hyperxerophilous caatinga, a drier vegetation with an abundance of cacti and smaller, scattered plants, such as jurema-preta, mufumbo, marmeleiro, xique-xique, and facheiro. Another type of vegetation easily found is palm trees, especially the carnauba palm. Climate The climate is typical of semi-arid regions, with rainfall of 734 mm/year. Its rainy season is from February to May, with temperatures ranging from 22°C to 35°C.
