Why Does My Diesel Smoke So Badly Part 1: Great Example Shown

I have in my shop a very nice Mercedes W123 turbo diesel station wagon that has recently had a rebuilt engine installed. The engine runs great with fairly good power, but it smokes black smoke to high heaven when accelerating. What could be wrong? The owner who is a friend of mine finally admitted he really does not like driving it because he is embarrassed about the smoke coming out of the tail pipe.
