LAST DIESEL | Santa Clara VTA 2002 Gillig Low Floor 40' #2224 | Line 71 [FULL ROUTE NB]

I'm officially back in the South Bay for more to come. On my first transit fanning day, and with 2224 out n' about, I decided to head out early in the morning to catch it during its first few trips of the block it was assigned to. After a couple of 31 trips, me and my friend made the choice to head up to Milpitas for a Clipper card value refill. Even though the day started heating up, the entirety of trip was AC free, which I was pretty happy about. This was good for better sounding environments, but it got to the point where I started sweating a lot near the end. This unit is very special, and is considered by many to be one of the oldest Gillig LFs active in the country. As of June 2026, it is the last remaining unit of the entire VTA Gillig Low Floor diesels, since all were retired a while ago. This unit was originally meant to be one of the few training coaches at Chaboya, however it was kept active in revenue. Sometime this summer, it will eventually be replaced by the newer 5400s that have soon to enter service. Let this be your calling to catch this last breathing diesel, before the entire VTA fleet transitions to fully Hybrid-operated.
