The *Thiruvananthapuram–Kanniyakumari track doubling project (86.56 km)* is one of Southern Railway's most critical yet challenging infrastructure developments. It serves as a vital corridor connecting Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and is a key link for freight movement from the nearby Vizhinjam International Seaport. The project is moving forward via sectional commissioning, though it has faced delays due to complex land acquisition and dense terrain. Current Sectional Status & Timeline The overall completion deadline for the remaining highly congested patches has been pushed to **December 2027**. *Nagercoil Junction to Kanniyakumari (19.26 km):* *Fully Completed & Operational.* This section was inspected, certified by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), and opened to double-line traffic. *Nagercoil Junction to Eraniel (18 km):* Earthworks, track-laying, and station modifications are entering final phases, targeting an upcoming commissioning. *Thiruvananthapuram Central to Nemom (Thiruvananthapuram South):* Progress is at roughly 70%. Heavy construction is active, including structural work on major Road Overbridges (ROBs) to make way for the second line. *Eraniel – Parassala – Neyyattinkara:* This section has faced "patchy" progress due to tight land pockets. However, major bridge components and station upgrades are heavily underway. The Thiruvananthapuram-to-Parassala stretch (approx. 31 km) is roughly 70% complete, with the final handovers ongoing. Key Technical Challenges *The Tunnels:* The stretch features major technical hurdles involving tunneling and widening at specific choke points like **Thannivila, Kaithakuzhi, and Valvaithankostam**. Specialized engineering methods have been deployed to widen these passes safely without disrupting the existing single line. *Infrastructure Shifting:* Massive civil adjustments are required. For instance, sections require relocating major water pipelines (in coordination with the Kerala Water Authority) and reconstructing crucial overbridges. What it Means for Commuters & Freight Once fully operational, this line will completely eliminate the "crossings delay" (where one train has to wait at a station for an oncoming train to clear the single track). Crucial Speed Upgrade: The sectional speed limit on parts of the existing track has already been bumped up to **100 km/h**. Once the doubling and curve corrections are fully finished, speeds are slated to hit **110 km/h**, vastly reducing travel time between Trivandrum and Kanyakumari.
