Led by her mother, who had a strong passion for education, she came to Seoul, attended Sookmyung Girls' High School, and entered the Department of Korean Language and Literature at Seoul National University. However, the Korean War broke out just five days after the entrance ceremony, forcing her to discontinue her studies and work in the portrait department of the U.S. Eighth Army PX. Having experienced the devastating tragedy of losing her older brother and uncle during the war, she married in 1953 and lived as a full-time housewife raising one son and four daughters. In 1970, at the age of forty, she made her late debut in the literary world when her full-length novel *The Bare Tree*—which captured the scars of war and her connection with the painter Park Soo-keun, whom she met at the PX—won the Women's Dong-A full-length novel contest. Despite her late start, Park Wan-seo went on to ceaselessly leave behind a vast body of work over the next 40 years, including over 80 short stories, 15 full-length novels, children's stories, and essay collections, establishing herself as a writer who firmly supported modern Korean literature. Her literary world traverses the collapse of social order caused by war, the tragedy of national division, the dark side of capitalism, the lives and false consciousness of the urban middle class, women's issues, and the lives and deaths of the elderly. In particular, during the 1970s, she cynically and scathingly criticized the materialism rampant during the era of developmental dictatorship, while in the 1980s, she directly addressed patriarchy and women's issues.
