A Verdade sobre a Economia Portuguesa: Resiliência ou Estagnação?

The Portuguese economy in the first quarter of 2026 is at a crossroads of contradictory signals, growing above the European average, but with its main engines losing momentum. In this video, we analyze in detail what the latest data from the INE (National Institute of Statistics) and the Bank of Portugal reveal about the first three months of the year. It uncovers the paradox behind the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which registered a positive year-on-year variation of 2.3%, but a completely zero quarter-on-quarter variation (0.0%). We also address the worrying return of inflation, which jumped to 3.3% in April, driven by external shocks and the increased cost of fuel due to geopolitical instability in the Middle East. Furthermore, we scrutinize the labor market, which remains the "invisible social shield" with an unemployment rate of 5.8% and average nominal wages fixed at €1,611, and the severe impact of the industrial crisis in Germany, which caused Portuguese goods exports to fall by 6.4%. Finally, we assessed the psychological brake caused by the sharp drop in consumer confidence, which reached its lowest level since December 2023.
