The solar system we've seen in textbooks is a flat disk with eight planets neatly arranged around the sun. However, when asked what lies above and below this disk, many tend to assume it's empty space. In reality, beyond the solar system lie layers upon layers of incredibly vast structures. These include the Oort Cloud, a spherical shell enveloping the entire solar system; the heliosphere, a protective bubble shielding Earth from cosmic rays; and the local interstellar cloud and local bubble that the solar system is currently passing through. Zooming out further reveals the galactic halo, a region where some of the oldest stars in the universe reside. Our journey through the solar system's upper and lower regions revealed the realization that our familiar concepts of "up" and "down" were merely constructs of human convenience.
