The Disgraceful Contract Marvel Tried to Force on Jack Kirby! | WTF?! History
Every universe has a creator. For the Marvel Universe, that foundation was laid brick by brick by the King himself, Jack Kirby. But in the mid-1980s, a brutal real-world public relations war erupted between Kirby and the multi-million dollar publisher he built. In this episode of the "WTF?!" playlist, Colin from Ghost Train Comics rides back to look at the bitter campaign for Jack Kirby's original 1960s artwork and how a unified community finally forced Marvel to bend the knee. Throughout the 1960s, Kirby poured his soul onto more than 8,000 pages of original Bristol board, co-creating Captain America, the Fantastic Four, Thor, the Hulk, the X-Men, and the Avengers. Yet by 1984, Marvel claimed they could only locate roughly 88 of those pages—barely 1%. Worse than the missing art was the predatory, four-page legal trap Marvel demanded Jack sign to get them back. It stripped him of his dignity, required him to sign away historical claims to his creations, and insultingly stated Marvel was merely granting him physical "custody" of the paper. Discover how Gary Groth and The Comics Journal broke the story wide open, and how an unprecedented front of artistic solidarity—led by a furious Frank Miller shaming Marvel on stage, alongside Alan Moore and Will Eisner—turned a private skirmish into a moral crusade. We also dive into the dramatic convention showdown where Roz Kirby publicly shut down Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter, and how corporate desperation to sell the company finally cracked the wall in 1987.
