How is a drinking water well drilled?

Drilling a drinking water well involves several steps. First, experts select a suitable location where underground water is likely to be found, often using geological surveys. Then, a drilling machine is used to bore a deep hole into the ground until it reaches the water-bearing layer (aquifer). After that, a steel or PVC casing is inserted to prevent the well walls from collapsing and to protect the water from contamination. Finally, a pump is installed to bring the clean water to the surface for household or community use.
