As adults, we demand submission from others. Students, employees, and anyone who depends on us must obey. What if those higher in the hierarchy are merely ostensible authorities? What if their commands and rules only serve their own interests? We like to think that only others are capable of inhumane behavior; that sadists carried out the orders of tyrants, and that cruelty on command is a thing of the past. And if someone with a degree ordered you to electrocute another person today, would you do it? If you were given power, say, in a refugee camp and could mete out punishment, are you sure you would be fair? And finally, if at some point you had a different opinion than your group of friends, would you stand up for yourself without batting an eye? This lecture is a symbolic journey through time: we will travel back to 1955, 1963, and 1971. Starting with experiments that changed the face of psychology, we will discuss our true selves: obedience to the point of pain, the Lucifer effect, and the "independence" of thought. Dr. Milena Drzewiecka is a psychologist. She studies leadership, communication, and impression formation in politics. She views politics through the lens of a psychologist (she holds a Ph.D. in social sciences in psychology) and the lens of a journalist (she worked as a television news reporter for many years). Simultaneously, she observes, studies, and analyzes the "feelings and beliefs" that "speak more powerfully" to voters. In her research, she addresses leadership preferences and perceptions, as well as image-building methods in politics. She is interested in the application of social psychology in election campaigns, the prototype of the "ideal politician," and the construction of media messages. She is a trainer and expert consultant for public entities in the areas of leadership, image, and communication. A graduate of the Faculty of Journalism and Political Science at the University of Warsaw, psychology and Interdisciplinary Doctoral Studies at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw, and the Foreign Policy Studies at the Diplomatic Academy of the Polish Institute of International Affairs, she has received numerous international scholarships (including from the University of Bern in Switzerland, the University of Winchester in England, and the Berliner Journalisten-Schule in Germany). At SWPS University, she teaches classes in the psychology of political marketing and workshops on media psychology. About the project: BED TEKA is a project of the PGNiG TRANSATLANTYK FESTIVAL, organized in collaboration with VOX, Porta, Concordia Design, and SWPS University. Fifty beds, each equipped with a projector and screen, were placed between Piotrkowska 136 and 142 in Łódź. From July 14th to 21st, 2017, in addition to outdoor film screenings, attendees could attend lectures from SWPS University at the Bed Library, use the film reading room provided by the PWSFTViT Publishing House and Wojciech Marzec Publishing House, relax with radio plays from the NIna and Audioteka.pl collections, and enjoy meals served by the "Lokal" restaurant. #Authority #obedience #conformism
