After Botvinnik saved his match against Flohr in 1933, he realized he could now play on equal terms with the world's best chess players. He then formulated his manifesto: "Win the chess crown for the USSR!" Alekhine was the World Champion at the time... So, he had to reach his level and, in some areas, try to surpass his opponent. Their first short opening duel took place in Nottingham in 1936. Alexander Alekhine sacrificed several pawns in the opening... but White's attack failed to produce any results, and at that point, the former World Champion was perfectly content with a draw. But at the 1938 AVRO tournament, things were different—and Botvinnik, playing White, absolutely refused to let his compatriot, who had regained the crown, go home in peace! The day before, he crushed Capablanca himself, creating one of the greatest games in chess history, and now he added a masterpiece against A.A. At first glance, there's nothing particularly remarkable about this game—White's opening pressure, exchanges, and the transition to an endgame where Botvinnik seemed to create maximum problems for his opponent with minimal effort. But... that's the beauty of it: every move he makes, wasting Black's time and space, is like a Commander's move, bringing them closer to ruin. Even such a great chess player as Alekhine couldn't stand up to Botvinnik, and one can only regret that they never met in a match for the chess crown...
