SPADOLINI GIORNALISTA - INTERVISTA A COSIMO CECCUTI

Spadolini, editor of Il Resto del Carlino and Corriere della Sera, conceived of journalism as a civic responsibility and a tool for change. With Indro Montanelli, he contributed to the passage of crucial laws protecting the Venice lagoon from industrial pollution. He forcefully denounced the degradation of information: once, news was manufactured; today, too often, it's about chasing trends and likes. Yet journalism remains a noble profession, to be practiced with moral rigor, independence from politics, and respect for the facts. Spadolini stated it unambiguously: "If journalism becomes servile, democracy is over." Restoring its dignity means independence, verifying sources, denouncing injustices, and defending citizens. As Citizen Kane teaches, the press is only a power if it remains free.
