The symbols of Cappadocia are the strange “mushroom rocks.” The biggest are about 20 meters tall. They are called “fairy chimneys” because of their mysterious shape. Until recently, the dark-colored rocks that look like hats on heads were said to be hard basalt made from lava. However, new research has revealed that they are made of tuff, a type of rock made of volcanic ash. The dark-colored rocks are traces of algae that once thrived there. What is more, Cappadocia has been inhabited since ancient times. Christians fleeing persecution left behind a unique culture that lasted a thousand years. The rock churches, carved out of the oddly shaped rocks, are magnificent. Monks dug caves in the rocks and used them as places for prayer.
