Big 12 Coaches Don’t Believe Texas Tech Will Win the League; One Even Picked Iowa State Instead

Big 12 coaches do not believe Texas Tech will win the conference in 2026. In a preseason poll conducted by Brett McMurphy of On3, the coaches picked BYU to win the Big 12 over Texas Tech. BYU received 13 total votes to reach the Big 12 Championship Game, while Texas Tech received only eight. That means nearly half the league’s coaches did not even pick the Red Raiders to make the title game. Even more surprising, one coach picked Iowa State to win the Big 12, while West Virginia also received a vote to reach the championship game. Are Big 12 coaches overreacting to the loss of Brendan Sorsby? Do they lack confidence in Will Hammond? Or is BYU simply the most complete team in the conference? John Kurtz breaks down the coaches’ poll, why BYU received so much respect, what it says about Texas Tech and how the predictions compare to the betting markets.
