Is it possible to transform vintage speakers from the 80s and 90s into a high-end system without breaking the bank? In this episode, Guntars Šmit shows a practical approach: take a successful vintage speaker with a good bass driver and a sealed enclosure (in this case, a 1984 Tesla), upgrade the weak link (midrange and high frequencies), and then convert the speaker to an active format: without a passive crossover inside, with an active crossover and 6-channel amplification. The video shows the actual assembly, adapters for the new speakers (precise fit), careful wiring, sealing, connection via a multi-pin connector, and then measurements (frequency response, impulse/step response) and room tuning. The goal is neutrality, high detail (dynamic range), and comfortable, fatigue-free sound. Budget: €1,000–€1,600 for a pair of active speakers (depending on the electronics). If you already have a "donor" speaker, the upgrade can be significantly cheaper; in this example, around €200 for new midrange/highrange speakers plus electronics. The project takes about a week.
