INSTRUMENTOS MUSICAIS NOS TEMPOS BÍBLICOS

Music has always been a fundamental part of worship in Israel and has profoundly marked biblical history. Far beyond entertainment, it was an expression of faith, celebration, communion, and even a call to battle. In this video, we will delve into biblical musical instruments, exploring their role in Hebrew culture and their importance in praise and worship of the Lord. The Bible mentions three major categories of musical instruments in biblical times: strings, wind instruments, and percussion instruments. These sounds accompanied psalms and hymns of praise, accompanied festive processions, victory celebrations, and even solemn moments. However, they were rarely used in times of mourning, as their purpose was to lift the soul in joy before God. Among the best-known biblical instruments is the kinnor, the Hebrew harp or lyre. According to Genesis 4:21, it was invented by Jubal, becoming famous as the instrument of King David, the psalmist of Israel. The kinnor had between 3 and 10 strings, made of sheep gut, and was played with the fingers or a small plectrum. The nebel, also called a psaltery or lute, was larger and lower-pitched, and was used especially in religious ceremonies. Assyrian depictions show similar triangular-shaped instruments, revealing the cultural influence of neighboring peoples. The sound of the strings was ideal for accompanying the human voice, becoming a symbol of joy during festivals and worship. It is no coincidence that many Psalms highlight these instruments in the context of biblical worship. Among wind instruments, the most emblematic is the shofar, made from a ram's horn. It had unique functions: summoning the people, announcing wars, proclaiming the Year of Jubilee, and marking crucial moments, such as the fall of the walls of Jericho in Joshua 6. In addition, silver trumpets, called hatzotzerot, were exclusive to the priests in the tabernacle and temple, used to call assemblies and mark Israel's great feasts. There was also the chalil, similar to a flute or oboe, used in celebrations and even funerals, revealing the versatility of biblical music. Among the percussion instruments, the toph (similar to a tambourine) stands out, used in dances and processions, especially by women. Miriam, Moses' sister, celebrated the victory at the Red Sea by playing the tambourine in Exodus 15. There were also cymbals, which produced a strong and striking sound, used by the Levites in great celebrations in the temple, as recalled in Psalm 150. Another curious example was the mena'anim, similar to the Egyptian sistrum, a type of rattle that added rhythm to the festivities. All these biblical musical instruments formed a true Hebrew orchestra, where each sound had a spiritual meaning: the strings swayed the songs, the flutes brought joy to banquets, and the shofar echoed like the very voice of God calling his people. This study shows that music in the Bible was not only art, but also worship. As the psalmist said, "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord" (Psalm 150:6). 👉 Have you ever imagined what it would be like to hear this ancient orchestra live?
