It is said that mastering 10,000 English words in order of frequency covers approximately 98% of general English texts and allows for a correct understanding of English. However, memorizing 10,000 words by rote is not realistic. So how do you acquire vocabulary? The author argues that different strategies should be used for high-frequency words (outgoing vocabulary) and low-frequency words (receptive vocabulary), and proposes an approach from seven linguistic perspectives. High-frequency words require a "strategy for becoming usable," and introduces four perspectives: collocation, phrase, metaphor, and connotation. On the other hand, low-frequency words require a "strategy for understanding meaning," and introduces three perspectives: etymology, semantic networks, and frames. Furthermore, as a practical guide to utilizing these seven perspectives, the author reveals a special learning method that makes full use of corpora, generative AI, and dictionaries. The book also includes two "vocabulary size tests" at the end to help readers understand their own vocabulary size. This is an essential book for anyone who wants to seriously improve their English skills, including those who need English for business, those aiming for high scores on various English proficiency tests, those preparing for studying abroad or overseas assignments, and students and teachers who want to explore a new world of English. [About the Author] Satoru Uchida Born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1983. After serving as a specially appointed lecturer at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, he became an associate professor at the Graduate School of Language and Culture, Kyushu University in 2014. His specialties are English linguistics (cognitive semantics, corpus linguistics) and applied linguistics (lexicography, English language education). Member of the Foreign Language Working Group, Curriculum Subcommittee, Central Council for Education. ------------------------------------------------ ■ "In Search of Living Latin" ■ [Explanation] I want you to know the living form of Latin, a language often called a "dead language." This is the first travel essay about Rome by "Mr. Latin." This book is neither a difficult language textbook nor a dry academic work. From inscriptions on street corners, on church walls, on fountains, to traces of politics remaining in tourist attractions—this book allows you to experience, through travel, how 2000-year-old Latin continues to live on in the city. It's an enjoyable essay to read, yet before you know it, you'll naturally acquire knowledge of history and language. It's a new reading experience—a truly "educational essay." You don't need to know Latin. In fact, it's even more interesting for those who don't know it. When you finish reading, the origins of city signs and words will look a little different to you. ● For history lovers. ● For travel lovers. And I recommend this to anyone who wants to rediscover the joy of learning. Table of Contents ●Chapter 1: Exploring Rome ●Chapter 2: A Stay at Vivarium Novum ●Chapter 3: To the Pontifical Salesian University ●Chapter 4: A Visit to the Vatican [About the Author] Latin-san (Latengo-san) Born in Tochigi Prefecture in 1992.
